*Causes:

When there is a change in pressure, such as a vacuum in the supply, thermal expansion or a higher pressure within the system.

*Risks:

Can introduce contaminants (hazardous chemicals, fertilizers, waste, or harmful bacteria) into the clean water supply. This poses serious health risks to consumers that drink or come in contact with the water supply.
